Young Carers

Young Carers at Rolls Crescent Primary School.

Here at Rolls Crescent Primary School we are committed to providing ongoing support for young carers and their families. Being a young carer is something to be proud of, young carers develop skills that are helpful to them now and in their futures.
A Young Carers is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who has a disability, long term illness, a mental health condition or additional problem.

Children may offer support with:
  • Helping someone communicate
  • Looking after younger siblings
  • Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
  • Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
  • Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs) 
  • Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
  • Managing medication

There are lots of ways school can help:
  • The child can join an in school nurture group or ICT club at lunch time
  • The child may access extra support with their work
  • School can be more understanding or the child’s circumstances and sign post the family to relevant services
  • School can sign post the family to other relevant services

If you know a child in Rolls Crescent who could be a Young Carer please contact Miss McKenzie via the school office on 0161 2099930 or by email on mckenzie@rolls-crescent.manchester.sch.uk
