Young Carers
Young Carers at Rolls Crescent Primary School.
Here at Rolls Crescent Primary School we are committed to providing ongoing support for young carers and their families. Being a young carer is something to be proud of, young carers develop skills that are helpful to them now and in their futures.
A Young Carers is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who has a disability, long term illness, a mental health condition or additional problem.
Children may offer support with:
- Helping someone communicate
- Looking after younger siblings
- Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
- Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
- Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
- Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
- Managing medication
There are lots of ways school can help:
- The child can join an in school nurture group or ICT club at lunch time
- The child may access extra support with their work
- School can be more understanding or the child’s circumstances and sign post the family to relevant services
- School can sign post the family to other relevant services
