French

Developing communication skills through MFL

At Rolls Crescent we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills including key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and extends their knowledge of how language works. Study of language can be linked with other curriculum areas to reinforce knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects. At Rolls Crescent, French is taught to all pupils across Key Stage 2 by a specialist teacher. Learning how the French language works can particularly enhance children's English language work, and we make explicit links to English grammar wherever possible in our teaching of French.

Lessons are dynamic and multi-sensory, using a range of visual, physical and ICT-based stimuli. There is a strong emphasis on speaking and listening, using digital sound-recording equipment for motivation and support.

Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others and fostering respect for those who speak languages other than English. Many of our children have considerable skills in a number of world languages. We believe that study of languages is important in our diverse, multilingual school community, and that it prepares our children for life as citizens of the world. We encourage celebration of all the children's languages and our community's many linguistic talents: Language builds bridges!
